The Moving City Map/ A Collective Urban Journey

How do we move through a city? Not just in the physical sense, but in the way we connect with strangers,
in fleeting encounters, in the invisible lines that weave us together

Scrapheap Collective presents The Moving City Map, a participatory art project that transforms human movement into an evolving, collaborative map. Through a simple act—passing a small booklet from
person to person—we invite urban dwellers to document their journeys, emotions, and encounters as they navigate the city

Each booklet follows a unique path, passed only between people who share a specific, visually identifiable characteristic: dog walkers, those with tattoos, people holding flowers, and more. As the booklets travel, they create a spontaneous web of urban experiences, tracing the rhythms and patterns of
human connection

How It Works

1. Receive a booklet—either from us or from someone who passes it to you

2. Write down your journey—where you received it, where you’re passing it on,
and any reflections, thoughts, or observations from your walk

3. Mark your journey on the provided city map—connecting the points of exchange

4. Pass it to the next participant—someone who shares the same defining characteristic as you

5. Final participant returns the booklet—using pre-paid postage to send it back to us

Once returned, the booklets will become part of a public exhibition, revealing a collective, human-made map of the city—one that is shaped not by streets and buildings, but by moments, encounters, and shared pathways

Join the Movement

The Moving City Map is an open experiment in urban storytelling, movement, and serendipity. If you receive a booklet, you become part of this evolving artwork— your steps, your thoughts, your presence, all contributing to an unseen, interconnected city.
